New zine! / 2010 Pledge Drive! / Hint of Things to Come

It’s Christmastime 2010—22 December 2010, to be exact—and so I come bearing gifts. I hope you will, too.

So, first things first: A NEW ZINE has arrived!!! Longtime Quiet Bubble readers know of my love of the late, lamented Whitney Balliett, the New Yorker’s jazz critic for more than three decades. The third issue of Afronaut–What? You didn’t know my zines were issues of a going concern? Well, now you do—is entitled A Tribute to Whitney Balliett. It collects all of my blog pieces devoted to Balliett, along with a brief intro, bound up in a snazzy 5.5” x 8.5” booklet. As a tribute to the 45-rpm vinyl singles that sustained jazz and popular music until the advent of the 33-rpm LP, I’ve printed 45 of these babies. The cover features “Big” Sid Catlett, Balliett’s favorite drummer.

The zine is available for $3 at the zine shop. You’ll notice that all zines (well, except for the free ones) are now a measly three bucks, including shipping. Alternately, anyone who donates $3 or more will automatically get the Balliett zine, provided that you give me your address. (Orders will be processed starting in January 2011.)

About those donations… Now that I’ve migrated to WordPress, the upkeep of Quiet Bubble costs nothing. So, five years of my archives—with the occasional new post—are free gifts to you, and will continue to be so. There will be more gifts in 2011, as I rethink the site, my writing, and my intentions. Quarterly mixtapes, video essays, zines, and perhaps even a weekly diary comic will be added, as I try to stretch the boundaries of what blog writing means to me.

These new gifts, however, cost money to produce, and this site doesn’t make much in return. I rarely post ads here, and I certainly don’t get money from them when I do so. To add to this, the writing in general takes up time and energy that I could be using to make money.

And that’s okay, I’m fine with that, this isn’t a pity party. Still, now’s the time for my annual pledge drive. Any donation is wonderful; it all helps. There’s a PayPal button to your right. If you’re scared of making financial transactions through the internet, you can email me at for a mailing address.

I’ve said this previously but I’ll say it again: “If it weirds you out to be paying for a blog, and you’re worried that all of this terrific content will soon be hidden behind a pay wall—don’t be weirded, don’t be scared. It won’t happen. Instead, think of all you’ve gotten over the past five years, and which can be accessed through the archives at no cost whatsoever. If you can’t or won’t donate, that’s okay; Quiet Bubble will still be free, I’ll still like you, the writing will remain here for future perusal and/or snickering.”

All that being said, every little bit helps. No matter what you give (or choose not to), I appreciate your reading this blog.  Happy holidays!  See you in 2011.
